Game-day research

Chippewas at Eagles preview: what our research says

Eastern Michigan enters tonight at 3-5, with a 1-2 home record and a 2-3 road record. Its latest result was a 20-24 loss at Ohio, following the 14-34 home defeat against Toledo. Before those losses, the Eagles beat Lindenwood, Massachusetts and Akron.

The quarterback situation remains unsettled because Noah Kim has an undisclosed injury. Brogan McCaughey started at Ohio and completed 27 of 39 passes for 197 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He is listed with the projected starters again. Eastern took a late lead through a touchdown pass to Joey Mattord, but Ohio answered with a kickoff-return touchdown.

Joshua Long remains a major receiving option. His Akron performance produced nine catches and 114 yards. Rudy Kessinger also contributed four field goals in the 25-23 victory there. The defense held Ohio to 90 rushing yards on 25 attempts, while the latest team notes describe a substantial improvement in run defense from last season.

Chris Creighton leads a staff that added assistant coaches during the offseason. Tate Omli and Kasey Teegardin share responsibility for the defense, while Mike Piatkowski remains offensive coordinator. Tonight brings a designated home game at Ford Field rather than Rynearson Stadium. The projected lineups remain provisional; a complete game-day availability bulletin could not be confirmed.
