Game-day research
Heat at Clippers preview: what our research says
Miami enters tonight at 2-5, with a 1-3 home record and a 1-2 road record. The 129-117 win at Atlanta and 145-125 home win over Indiana were followed by a 117-138 loss to the Lakers. That defeat began the western trip and put the focus back on defense.
The roster now centers on Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Miami acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. from Milwaukee and added shooting through Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr. Antetokounmpo had 30 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists against the Lakers. Thompson scored 19, while Adebayo had 16.
Erik Spoelstra has kept the same starters throughout the season so far. Portis was the first reserve used against the Lakers. The backup guard role remains unsettled between Ryan Conwell and Dru Smith, with Smith used later for his work in the zone. Spoelstra has stressed defensive effort and discipline rather than treating the roster turnover as an excuse.
For tonight, Antetokounmpo is probable with a right wrist sprain. Myron Gardner is questionable with a right quadriceps bruise, while Smith is available despite a facial cut. Miami visits the 1-6 Clippers at 9:30 PM CT. Los Angeles lists Bradley Beal, Brandon Ingram, Jordan Miller and Yanic Konan Niederhauser as out.
Season at time of writing
Miami is 2-5: 1-3 at home and 1-2 on the road. The offense produced wins of 129-117 at Atlanta and 145-125 against Indiana, but Miami then lost 117-138 to the Lakers. Spoelstra has identified defensive effort and discipline as problems.
The news
Building around Giannis
Miami brought in Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. from Milwaukee. Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware and Kasparas Jakučionis went the other way with draft assets. Antetokounmpo is averaging 28.4 points, 12.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists.
Defense remains the main concern
Miami allowed the Lakers to score 79 points before halftime, while Luka Doncic finished with 42. Erik Spoelstra has called for better defensive effort, concentration and discipline rather than using roster changes as an excuse.
Stable starters, shifting reserve guard minutes
Spoelstra has kept the same starters throughout the season so far. Portis was the first reserve used against the Lakers. Ryan Conwell entered before Dru Smith, but Smith later took the backup guard minutes as Miami used its zone defense.
New shooters contribute
Klay Thompson signed after a Dallas buyout, and Tim Hardaway Jr. also joined Miami in the offseason. Against Indiana, Thompson supplied 25 points and seven made threes, while Bam Adebayo contributed 27 points.
